As much as we love New York City, it isn’t the greatest place in the world to see the leaves changing color when fall rolls around. If you’re looking to rejuvenate yourself with a little bit of nature before the busy holiday season, consider getting away from the city for a weekend. Between Metro North, Amtrak, and the Long Island Railroad, there are plenty of options for getting a breather from the big apple, even if you don’t have a car.
Hudson, New York
The entire Hudson Valley is beautiful this time of year, and the city of Hudson is a great launching-off point for exploring this part of upstate New York. Located a two-hour train ride north of Manhattan, Hudson is full of galleries, restaurants, and bars that are on par with any you’ll find in New York City. If you’re looking for an escape from city life without sacrificing the comforts of home, Hudson is a no-brainer.

Rhinebeck, New York
A quaint village that’s a bit smaller than Hudson, Rhinebeck, is another wonderful option on the east side of the Hudson river. Accessible via Amtrak, Rhinebeck is only an hour and a half north of the big apple, and is a true getaway from city life.

Beacon, New York
In addition to a host of wonderful shops and restaurants, the city of Beacon is home to Dia:Baacon, one of New York state’s premiere art museums outside of Manhattan. Art lovers can get there via Metro North, and as it’s only an hour away from Grand Central Station, Beacon makes for a great day trip, or a relaxing weekend getaway.

The Hamptons
If you missed going to the Hampton during the summer months, consider heading east for a fall getaway. It might be too cold to go in the water, but the beaches will be nearly empty, and perfect for some needed solitude.

Montauk
The younger, hipper cousin to the Hamptons, Montauk is situated on the eastern tip of Long Island, which can feel like the edge of the world for some New Yorkers. But don’t be fooled, there are plenty of options for shopping, dining, and hiking in and around this beachside getaway.

Cranwell Resort, Spa, and Golf Club
For a truly luxurious weekend getaway, the Cranwell Resort is a welcome respite from the noise of city life. The resort is a three-hour drive from New York City, but is well worth the trek for a weekend of golf games and spa days.

Woodstock, New York
Although it’s mostly known for a music festival that shared its namesake, the town of Woodstock is a quiet outpost for the arts community, and makes for a relaxing fall getaway. Nestled in the Catskills Mountain Range, Woodstock is a perfect jumping-off point for hiking and frolicking in the woods.

North Fork, Long Island
If your ideal weekend getaway involves wine tasting, particularly drier white wines, then head out to North Fork, Long Island. Often described as a seaside version of the Napa Valley, this section of Long Island also boasts one of the state’s most exciting food scenes.

Cooperstown, New York
Most people know Cooperstown as being the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, but there is plenty more to this quaint enclave. If beer is your drink of choice, then the four breweries within this small town will definitely put you at ease.

Saratoga Springs, New York
In New York State, the fall season means turning freshly picked apples into cider, juice, or pies. Saratoga Springs is a perfect jumping-off point for the surrounding area’s apple picking, hay rides, and corn mazes. But if you’re looking for a little more excitement than your typical hay ride, head over to the Saratoga Race track, and bet the ponies against this scenic fall backdrop. Giddy up!
